Topics For Language Arts

These exercises provide an opportunity to use technology to look deeper into language arts work and extend the discussion of books and plays. Through this technology, students can better analyze the prose, provide their own input (through alternative endings) , and make associated maps be mouse click driven. The exercise can analyze and link text of these documents to further the discussion and understanding of the literature.

 


 
Motif Analysis
Reviewing Script of Play
This exercise searches for a play provided by the instructor, for a word entered by the student. All occurrences of the word are identified. For each occurrence, the character saying the word is named, and the complete dialog of which the word appears in presented. The student can develop a motif of the character by analyzing speech patterns in this way. In the example play - A Streetcar Named Desire - searching for word: "love" reveals very different uses of the word by the characters Blanche and Stella.

Highlight Stops
on a Story Trail

The story trail enables the student to create milestone circles of key locations on a map. Next the student can associate a block of text to appear in a pop-up box when the milestone circle is clicked. Milestones are numbered and should be ordered in a manner consist with the story. The instructor can select the base image for the study to use for the exercise.

Charting Alternative Endings
Memoir Story
This exercise supports the student implementing a flowchart of possible alternative endings for a story or memoir. The flowchart approach is asking a Yes/No question, followed by story text associated with each choice. A series of questions and resulting actions provide for a robust set of alternative endings. The text in the action boxes can be complete sentences or phrases of the key events that take place.
